Allied Telesis launches world’s first family of fiber Fast Ethernet PCIe NICs with PoE ports

Chiasso, Switzerland. 13 October 2009 – Allied Telesis has launched the world’s first range of fiber Fast Ethernet PCIe Network Interface Cards with Power over Ethernet ports, reinforcing its leadership in NIC technology and secure IP/Ethernet access solutions by offering higher performance, more cost efficient, secure VoIP with PoE capabilities.

The AT-2716FX/TP/SC, AT-2716FX/TP/ST and AT-2716FX/TP/MT are dual-port cards featuring both a multi-mode fiber connection and an Ethernet copper connection (10/100TX). The Power over Ethernet (PoE) copper port delivers up to 15.4W of power, allowing the NICs to provide power to any standard IEEE #802.3af Ethernet Powered Device (PD). This is a flexible, cost-effective solution permitting network administrators to deploy a wider array of network end-point devices including cameras and IP phones.

The new cards provide higher performance than conventional NICs and incorporate PCIe bus interfaces used in most modern computers and offer connection flexibility with support for ST, SC and MT fiber connectors. The AT-2716FX/TP/SC, AT-2716FX/TP/ST and AT-2716FX/TP/MT come with a Windows-based software utility to control ‘bridging’ between the copper and fiber ports guaranteeing the prioritization of data. This allows the copper port to connect to devices such as IP cameras and VoIP phones, and the card will ensure high quality prioritized traffic on the fiber link. The NICs allow a variety of configurations such as fiber cable for backhaul and access to a copper port connection, making them highly secure and reducing the cards’ vulnerability to a ‘sniffer’ or hacking device via the copper port.

Melvyn Wray, Senior Vice President of Marketing EMEA at Allied Telesis commented, “Allied Telesis has now simplified the process of delivering high performance VoIP over fiber into one, easy to manage solution – our family of fiber Fast Ethernet PCIe NICs with PoE ports. With conventional solutions, IT administrators have to install two cards into the PC which each run their own drivers or have to implement fiber to an external switch. This makes prioritizing VoIP data extremely complicated as voice data has to communicate between both cards over the internal computer backplane bus in competition with the CPU, hard disk, CD, DVD and graphics card. As a low-cost and high performance alternative, the AT-2716FX range of NICs stand out in the marketplace.”

The AT-2716FX/TP/SC, AT-2716FX/TP/ST and AT-2716FX/TP/MT are particularly suited to government and military applications where the distance to the switch is usually greater than 100 meters and therefore the use of copper cable is not an option, or where fiber infrastructure cabling is used for added security.

AT-2716FX/TP/SC, AT-2716FX/TP/ST and AT-2716FX/TP/MT will be available across Europe from October 2009
